Almost two weeks here in Glenwood Springs and I still have trouble with that day-night thing. I feel very sleepy in the mornings (usually I sleep over my wake-up time) and in the night I feel quite energetic. Sometimes I even take small bike-rides around the night city like I did today. I only finished my shift in the park at 10:30PM, because those gondolas were closed again and I had to wait until all the guests will leave park on the bus, so after that I made a small ride around the place. Glenwood Springs is usually sleeping after 10:00PM so it was quite empty.
It's already 1:00AM right now, but I don't feel like sleeping yet...I wonder if I'll sleep over tomorrow again...
Today was the first stormy day here in Glenwood Springs after all that terrible heat.
The wind was very strong and it even rained a little bit.
I miss fresh air and rains a lot. Back in Moscow I liked to walk under the rain and think about life.
Because of the storms they turned off the gondolas in the park and everyone had to take this dirty bus to get back to the basement.
In the gift store I see a lot of families every day, and I was surprised to notice how a lot of fathers are quite rude with their kids. I thought that was only true for Russia.
Today there was a father and his small 5 or 6 year old daughter in the shop. I was looking at them and I noticed how the man was kind to his daughter, and how he was explaining her something in a very caring manner.
Then they approached me to pay for what they were going to buy. That man gave me his credit card and I started explaining him several things like I always do when they pay with cards. He listened to me, but his face had that strange expression like he didn't understand what I wanted from him. I finished and then his small daughter made him lean down a little bit and started explaining everything once again...he had a very weak hearing I think. It looked very touchy - this 5 year-old girl caring about her dad.
I was pleased to see that kind of loving and caring realtionship between a father and a child. One of my most favorite movies "I am Sam" (with Sean Penn starring) came to my mind.
I remember first time I saw it I didn't really like it because the movie was about the unconditional love of a little girl to her father with mental disability and of his unconditional love to his daughter, and it seemed to me to be so unrealistic... When what I see around and particularly in families is mostly hatred.
Then I started liking the movie, because even though this kind of realtionship - caring and unconditional - might seem far from real life, it still exists somewhere.
I happened to be extremely lucky to get a day off on the 4th of July. Extremely because in the Glenwood Caverns 4th of July is a crazy day - as it is in all other amusement parks in America.
A week was more than enough for me to taste Glenwood Springs (as it is a very small city, even in comparison to other small towns in America), so I decided to explore a new place - Aspen.
I took my bike around 9 AM and started the way. People told me that Aspen was only 45 miles from Glenwood Springs so I thought it would be a fairly short bike trip. However, it took me 5 hours to get there. The heat was terrible and I had to make small stops every 30 minutes. On the other hand, it was not that bad as I had a chance to see some interesting things and also get a good sun tan.
I rode the whole way from the very bottom of this map to its very top
Colorado Mountain College
Abandoned railroad Aspen-Glenwood
Colorado is also well-known for its brilliant golf fields.
I passed Colorado River several times today. A lot of people were rafting.
Interstate Highway #82
Buttermilk is one of the most popular skiresorts in Aspen area.
The beginning of Aspen city
I noticed that many bridges in America are under reconstruction. This is one of them in Aspen.
Even though Aspen is only 40 miles from Gl.Sp. and is also fairly small town, it is still very different.
I liked the architecture of Aspen more than of Gl.Sp. and people were quite different as well.
They looked more American to me, plus I also recognized that a lot of them were dressed in a very fancy manner (Aspen is a high-elite city).
Even moutains in Aspen looked a little bit different. Aspen is actually considered to be the most expensive and exclusive mountain skiing area in the US.
In Aspen they have more malls, restaurants and entertainment stuff than we have in Gl.Sp.
Aspen Athletic club
This is a huge hotel+shopping mall.
I found this church in the very downtown of Aspen.
They claim to have this view on the very top. I doubt it a little. At least, today it was so hot, that all the snow should have melted down.
They also have some weird people in the streets.
Instead of "Bus stop".
On the way out of Aspen I found another golf-club, but the way it looked made me feel like I was in Moscow.
I felt very tired in the end of the day.
I think my bike did too.
So we both agreed on taking a bus back to Gl.Sp.
The bus was crazy. There was a bunch of old drunk guys (celebrating the Independence Day) and they started performing the strip-show right there. I burst into laughter, but it was very stupid and really looked ridiculous.
Well, this day was long...and it was interesting.
Here in Glenwood Springs there is a number of people I spend a lot of time with because we live or work together.
Here are some of their pictures.
This is Katie. She works with me in a gift-shop. Katie is from Portland, OR. She is very outgoing and talkative so I don't feel bored.
Laura is also working at the gift-shop. She lives in Colorado now, though she is from AK.
Nicoletta (left) is from Romania, and Nina (right) is from Russia. They also help in a store.
One of my house-mates Philip. He is a very typical American.
Wade is our MOD in Glenwood Caverns, and Kelly works for the gift-shop as well.
Who's that? Oh, right...it's me!
I would like to say thanks to all those who leave comments on my blog.
I enjoy doing the blog, but it wouldn't be that much fun without knowing that someone else is following it and getting your responses.
I read everything that you send and really appreciate it. So please keep going!
The thing that I really enjoy here in Glenwood Springs is walking or riding the bike and watching the nature around me. I love mountain views sooo much!I feel God's presence and His greatness in them.
Below are more pics that I made today:
Back in Moscow I never paid much attention to the cars around. They are pretty much all the same, and not very interesting.
Here in Glenwood Springs the majority of people are very wealthy and most of them have 2 or 3 cars - usually huge and expensive jeeps.
However, there are a lot of wild and weird cars around as well. I noticed that now I look around a lot and even made some pics today.
Many cars look like they are from horror-movies.
Like these ones:
There are also some old "collection" cars:
